Rack Power Distribution Units

Power distribution units supply cabinet equipment through a defined input connection and multiple outlets. Select a rack PDU by its complete electrical rating, outlet layout, mounting space and the information or control required by your operators.

Local metering, network monitoring and remote outlet switching are different functions. Confirm the requested model's datasheet before treating any of them as included.

Compare Rack PDU Functions

PDU functionWhat it doesWhat to specify
BasicDistributes power; local switching/protection depends on modelInput plug, current, outlets and protection
MeteredDisplays electrical measurements locallyMeasured parameters, display and accuracy
MonitoredCommunicates measurements and alarmsNetwork interface, protocol, thresholds and access
SwitchedProvides controllable outlets or groupsSwitching scope, restart behavior, access and interlocks

A meter does not by itself establish network monitoring. Monitoring does not by itself establish remote switching. Ask for model-specific confirmation of the required functions.

Published 1U Schuko Model Example

The four-way Schuko ON/OFF PDU provides a documented starting point for a basic rack configuration.

Model fieldPublished example
Format19-inch, 1U, aluminum body
Outlets4 × Schuko
Input100–240 VAC; maximum total current 16 A
Model cable1.8 m, 3 × 1.5 mm², 16 A French plug
Local controlON/OFF switch
Additional functionsCircuit breaker, surge protection and metering require configuration confirmation

These values apply to the linked example. They must not be reused as universal specifications for every PDU in the range.

Rack PDU Specification Checklist

  1. Supply: voltage, phase arrangement, input plug and available protective circuit.
  2. Load: total connected current, equipment power supplies and expansion allowance.
  3. Outlets: Schuko, IEC or other required interface, quantity, spacing and orientation.
  4. Mounting: horizontal U space or vertical position, cabinet clearance and cable routing.
  5. Protection: breaker, surge protection and grounding requirements.
  6. Information/control: local meter, network measurements, alarms or switching, with supported interfaces.
  7. Documentation: final rating label, drawing, compliance evidence, test requirements and packing.

The complete assembly is limited by its lowest-rated component. A change of input plug or supply cable can change the permitted current.

Power Distribution Unit FAQ

Does a metered PDU include remote access?

Not necessarily. Local metering and network monitoring are separate functions. Confirm the model's communications features.

Does monitored mean switched?

No. Remote measurements and remote outlet control are separate requirements.

What determines the maximum connected load?

The complete assembly rating, including input plug, cable, outlets and protective devices, together with the permitted supply circuit.

What information is needed for a quotation?

Send voltage and input connection, current/load, outlet types and count, mounting dimensions, cable length, protection and monitoring/control requirements.
